Subtraction Woes?
If your child is having a hard time with subtraction, here is a great method to practice at home.
It is called counting up. If you watch this youTube video, it will explain it better than I can type it. There isn't any sound, but the teacher writes the problem out step by step.

Vineyard Carnival
Tomorrow afternoon Vineyard will be holding it's annual Carnival. I am so excited for the carnival and hope to see you there.
The carnival is from 4-7. I will be there from 6:00-6:30 giving Golf Cart rides.
Today the students helped decorate 2 liter pop bottles for the soda walk. The students were grouped into 4's and came up with their own theme.

Buddy Reading
During small group time, we have been doing a variety of reading activities. One of them is buddy reading. Reading with a partner is a great way to improve fluency. Students can also be a peer tutor and help with sounding out words and figuring out the story. In our class we do 3 things when buddy reading:
1. Knee to Knee (or Desk to Desk)
2. Whisper Voice
3. Choose books from the Buddy shelf (both students have the a copy of the same book.)
This can also be done at home, even if you share one book.

Bully Role Play
Our class has been talking about building friendships, being respectful, and treating others kindly. We also have had discussions on what a bully is, and what to do in situations with them. Today the students were able to role play different situations where there might be bullies. They acted out two different versions of each problem. They did a great job and I know that they are going to have a great year being friends with one another.
Spelling for this week:
There were a few questions asked this last week about how to do the spelling homework. Some of the sorts can be confusing at first.
Please make sure that your child cuts out their spelling word cards. They need to be cut out in order to do the homework.
We have 3 groups of spelling in our class. The first week of class a spelling list was given to the students. Depending on what words they spelled correctly, they were assigned a group to work on vowel/spelling patterns to learn this year. Students can move to different groups as the year progresses as they improve.
The C's and V's on the cards represent the patterns. C's= Consonants and V's= Vowels. The students review over these patterns in school with me on the 1st day of the week and then practice by themselves Tuesday-Thursday.
The following are some pictures to help with the sorts at home.
